This nationally recognised course is designed  to provide participants with the skills and experience to operate as a Bookkeeper or Accounts Clerk. This qualification also ensures that successful participants can meet the academic eligibility requirements for registration as a BAS Agent with the Tax Practitioner’s Board.

The course provides participants with a working knowledge of the financial sector. It is designed to give participants a “bigger picture” of the financial services sector and improve their value to the organisation. On completion of this course, students will be able to: Apply professional practices in finance – Implement compliance procedures  – Prepare operational budgets –  Set up a computerised accounting systems – Maintain inventory records.

The qualification requires the successful completion of 13 units of competency. The units of competency currently being offered are listed in the table below.

Licensing/Regulatory Information

Note: * indicates units required to apply for a BAS agent registration

Persons providing a business activity statement (BAS) service must be registered by the Tax Practitioners Board and this qualification is currently cited as meeting the educational requirements for registration. Other conditions apply including a designated period of experience. Persons seeking BAS agent registration should check current registration requirements with the Board as this is reviewed regularly.

Assessment methods

The assessment criteria are identified in each unit of competency. Assessment methods may include:

  • written knowledge tests
  • role plays
  • case studies
  • written assignment/projects (including development of business documents)

Full details of the assessments for each unit of competency will be provided at the commencement of the unit of Competency.

Course Duration

Students are required to attend a minimum of 20 hours per week.

The course will extend over 1 year.

This will consist of:

  • one day orientation
  • 20 hour weeks teaching time
  • 12 weeks holiday

Entry Requirements for International Students

An English Language proficiency level of one of the following:

  • IELTS band score of 5.5 (academic test version or equivalent internationally recognized exam result) in line wih DIBP regulations
  • satisfactory completion of Pre-Intermediate level from a National ELT Accredication Scheme (NEAS) Accredited English Institution

Academic Requirements

  • satisfactory completion of secondary studies in applicants home country equivalent to an Australian Year 12 qualification is required for entry (for students applying from Assessment Level Country 3 and 4) or
  • satisfactory completion of a recognised foundation course in Australia or other recognized countries with a pass in all subjects
  • mature age students will also be considered without minimum education requirement.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning is the student’s opportunity to have their prior skills and competencies recognised. These skills and competencies may relate to units you are about to commence and as a result can exempt you from studying these units. However, there is a cost related to obtaining Recognition of Prior Learning. Refer to our (RPL) procedures for further information.

Credit Transfer (CT)

The Institute may grant credit transfer where there is documented evidence that equivalent competencies/learning outcomes have been achieved in a course of study with another Registered Training Organisation (RTO). On successful completion of this course students will receive the qualification FNS40615 Certificate IV in Accounting which is a nationally recognised qualification within Australia.

Students who do not fully complete the qualification but who are successful in completing a number of the units of competency will receive a statement of attainment for those units
