Living and Studying in Geelong
Geelong is situated a lazy 45 minutes’ drive from Melbourne. Geelong is the second largest city in Victoria and has all the benefits of a sizeable city like Melbourne but with the relaxed atmosphere of a coastal country town. Facing north on Corio Bay, Geelong boasts a glorious waterfront precinct, sophisticated dining options and all kinds of entertainment on tap. There is a lively calendar of events and the region is perhaps the Australian wine industry’s best-kept secret.
The charming nearby towns and villages of the Bellarine offer a huge range of things to do. The Bellarine Peninsula faces Port Phillip Bay on its northern and eastern shores and Bass Strait on the south, so water activities abound, ranging from gentle bay beaches that are great for families and fishing to sensational surf beaches and world-class scuba diving sites.
The Bellarine has been building a reputation as a food and wine destination and The Bellarine Taste Trail brings together many of the gourmet offerings of the region including wineries, restaurants and cafes and producers of beer, fresh produce, goats cheese, olive oil and seafood.
Geelong is the gate way to the World famous Great Ocean Road and hosts some of the biggest Cultural and Music events in the state.
Geelong is a sporting hub that hosts events such as the UCI World Championships in cycling and the Australian International Air show every 2 years and the home of the Geelong Cats football team just to name a few.
Geelong is a shopping dream with a main hub of shopping and many specialty stores scattered all around this beautiful part of Australia.
In comparison to Melbourne, Geelong offers a much lower cost of living.
Geelong’s Climate
Geelong has a diverse climate with warm summers and cool winters. The temperature in the summer months (December, January and February) generally ranges from 18°C to 26°C, however, temperatures can reach over 40°C on occasion.
The temperature in the winter months (June, July and August) generally ranges from 6°C to 15°C, however, temperatures can fall as low as 1°C on occasion.
Although mostly consistent Geelong can have all four seasons in a day at any part of the year, so it is recommended that when packing for Australia include clothing that is for Summer and Winter and something in between.
